No toes or fingers were frozen while capturing this photograph. This sweet chickadee was kind enough to come to a tree right by my house so I didn’t have to venture outside.

The lake still has a little more warmth to give off as the cold air blows over. Close to shore where this picture was taken you can see a little steam coming off the water but out in the open water the fog is really rolling.

- Yes indeed it was cold. Temperatures were around zero and with windchill it was below zero. Not a day to stay out very long.December 23, 2009 - 12:23 pm
The weather outside is feeling a little frightful today…single digit temperatures with below zero windchills. I grabbed my camera anyway and headed down to the lake to get pictures of the fog rolling across the water. (I’ll try to post some of those pics later) It didn’t take long until I was feeling sorry for myself for being way too frozen. Once I saw this little ice-encrusted plant along the waters edge, I had a renewed appreciation of my warm coat and boots though. Stay warm out there!

Life has kept me busy over the past few weeks but now the Christmas gifts have been purchased, the cards have been mailed, and the snow tires have been mounted. I’m finding my way out into the mountains as much as possible to take in the snow and cold with a little help from good boots and a thermos of hot chocolate. Wishing you a wonderful December and a white Christmas!

As the Thanksgiving weekend is winding down and we are all moving towards Christmas, I thought I would recommend a set of photography books I love. At a point when I was really trying to learn more about fine-tuning my photography skills, I stumbled upon the Scott Kelby book entitled The Digital Photography Book. Scott now has a volume 2 and volume 3 available. All 3 books contain some great practical advice on equipment and technique with a dose of humor thrown in. If you are looking for a gift for a budding photographer or a gift for yourself, check out these great books. And no, I do not make any commission for recommending these books. I just really like them and always appreciate a good recommendation myself. Have a great week and please feel free to share any recommendations you may have as well.

I hope you all had a healthy and happy Thanksgiving with all the important people in your lives. A friend just told me they found their dog in his bed eating a pumpkin pie just before dinner. I was disappointed that she didn’t snap a picture of the thief enjoying his haul of the day. Did you have any amusing photographic moments on the holiday?

My kids were just in a conversation about where their favorite places in the world are. I thought about my own favorite places…some are far away and exotic while some represent the simpler pleasures in life. This photo is one of our local favorites. We have spent many fun days watching the kids catch frogs, newts, and fish here. The location provides fun times as well as some pretty pictures along the way.

Exactly one year ago, I took this image on a snowy autumn morning. Today it is a warm 50 degrees outside. Oh what a difference a year has made. I love the warmth but I do look forward to getting out to take pictures of some nice snowy scenes again.

Summer evenings by the lake are so alive with activity. I love taking in all the sights and sounds that are always present. During that stretch of time when the leaves are gone and the snow has not yet arrived, life along the lake takes on a quieter tone. With very few people wandering along the waterfront, I stop and appreciate the natural beauty of the lake a bit more. Even without the leaves or snow, the lake is special in the evening. The sounds of the water, the silhouette of the mountains across the lake and the colors of the sky all come together beautifully. It doesn’t take long to get lost in the peace and simplicity. Wishing you a weekend full of fun with a bit of peace and quiet thrown in too.

I’m heading out for a hike with my dog, Scout and my camera in tow. I don’t think I will have many photographic moments with wildlife with an energetic dog along but you never know! Last summer I took this picture of a curious chipmunk with Scout and my two boys with me. Have a great day.
